GET INTO GOLF FOR MEN: The Men’s Committee of Castlecomer Golf Club is presently promoting the game of golf  among men who possibly once played golf as juveniles or among men who like outdoor sports and are curious about golf as a possible   new game for them.      Well, if you are in in the above or any other category of golfing curiosity and interest, the good news is that you will be welcomed with open arms in our club. We have a great course and dedicated and friendly membership. SENIORS:  22 men competed in the Pat Byrne Memorial Trophy on Wednesday 12th June. It was a 16 hole singles stableford competition. Scoring was excellent. Congratulations to the winners. JUNIOR CUP: Castlecomer Golf Club were well represented  in The Junior Cup in Athy on Saturday 8th June. The team, managed by Tommy O’ Neill, included  Ronan Ryan, Michael O’Neill, Padraig Curry. Colin Dunne and  Shay Kennedy.  Unfortunately the team didn’t progress to Sunday but thanks to all who put themselves forward for the Club.

HOLE-IN-ONE: Congratulations to Joan Brennan who had a hole-in-one on the par 3 fifteenth in the three person champagne scramble on Saturday in the company of team mates Betty Byrne and Caroline Conway. Holes in one are rare for most but for Joan it is her third ace in Castlecomer!
LADIES: Castlecomer Ladies Intermediate team met Wicklow town in the neutral venue of Baltinglass on Thursday in what were very close matches culminating in a win for Castlecomer on the 22nd hole. The Ladies Junior Foursomes met Borris in Gowran on Friday in what again were close matches with a win for Castlecomer.

Well done to players and managers. Hard luck to our Senior cup team who were pipped at the post by Arklow in Courtown last weekend.
Peugeot Foursomes Qualifer: Joan Brennan and Bessie Brophy qualified with a fantastic score of 42 points. Well done.

Men’s Inter Club: Castlecomer Golf Club played The Heath Golf Club in both the South Leinster Trophy and the Michael Moore Cup on Sunday 26th May. (a) South Leinster Trophy: Castlecomer had home advantage in the South Leinster. Of the 4 matches played in Castlecomer, Comer won 3, with 1  called in with  ‘Comer 2 holes up. Castlecomer won 2 of the 3 away matches with 1 called in. Comer Won 5 -0 with 2 called in overall. The team was, at home  Peter Mulhall, Gerry Mealy, Anthony Gilroy  and Kieran Bergin while away in the Heath were Michael Doheny, Sean Scanlon, and Dick Farrell. (b) Michael Moore Cup: The Michael Moore Cup matches went Castlecomer’s way as well winning all  3 of their home matches and with 1 away success to give an overall result of 4 -2 with one called in. The team was, at home  Michael Brennan, Martin Ring, and John Lacey while away in the Heath G.C. were Pat Haughton, Martin Mealy, Ger Comerford and  Michael O’Connor.

SENIORS: Thirty two golfers played in the 16 hole classic on Wednesday 22nd May. The course in general, including  fairways and rough, was a credit to the course staff and with perfect weather, many were expecting high scores. They failed to materialise possibly due to scarified greens – which should be fully in order again inside a couple of days. Well done to the winners and everyone who played in the classic. DUGGAN CUP: Castlecomer’s Duggan Cup team under manager, Martin Brennan recorded a good win against Callan on Sunday 19th May. Pat Comerford and Nicky Walsh were out first in Callan and won on the 19th while  Michael Minogue and Andy Cleere followed this up with a win on the 15th. In Castlecomer meanwhile Gerry Meally and Tom Mooney were out first and also won their match on the 15th  to seal victory. The other two  home  matches of Michael Daly and Paul Rice  and Marty O’ Shea and John Holohan were called in. Continued good wishes to our Duggan Cup team.

BARTON CUP:  Callan GC proved too strong for Castlecomer GC in the 2nd round of the Barton Cup on Monday 6th May, with Castlecomer eventually losing 3.5 to 1.5 matches. Callan played top class golf to win the 1st Match in Castlecomer defeating Jason Brennan & Marty O’Shea. In the second match Mick O’Neill & Ronan Walsh played very steady golf to win by 3 & 2. In the last match at home Paul Rice & John Smith were involved in a top class match with superb golf played, there were 8 birdies shared between both pairs in the first 10 holes & the match was all flat when they were called in on the 16th hole.

Away from home the Callan golfers were in top form & on the day just too strong for Castlecomer. Michael Dermody & Paul Walsh, Padraig Curry & John Dowling both lost their matches on the 16th hole.

CHAMPION GOLFER: Castlecomer Golf Club congratulates  Emer Foley in  winning the Junior Scratch Cup in Tullamore Golf Club last weekend.  Emer who plays off an  11 h/c won with a marvellous score of 124 gross.

Minor Cup:    Round 2  was played at Waterford G.C. Castlecomer faced stiff opposition against Tramore G.C. The Team were as follows; D.O’Donohoe, P. Doheny, N. Kinsella, E. Healy and B. Brophy.  All matches were close and played in a sporting fashion.  Castlecomer ladies battled bravely being narrowly beaten 3 and 2.  Managers were Maria Downey and Loretta Mansfield.
Junior Foursomes: Congratulations to the Junior Foursomes  who beat  Portlaoise G.C in Abbeyleix G.C. on 5th May. The Team were as follows; T.Manning, B. Owens, N. Mahon, F. Campion, E. Walsh and M. O’Keeffe. Managers Ann Ring and Honoria Fogarty.

J. B. CARR: Castlecomer played an in form Mount Juliet team in the second round of the J B Carr Scotch Foursomes inter club competition on Friday, 3rd May. Played on a beautiful evening at the  Jack Nicklaus designed  Mount Juliet course, Castlecomer held their own on the outward nine but had no answer to the hosts’ top form on the back 9. Despite the 4-1 defeat, the chins were up after the game and both teams enjoyed the banter and sporting reminiscences of former days  at the post match meal.Full credit to Mt Juliet for exemplifying sportsmanship and cordiality throughout and best of luck in the next round. Team manager on the day, Matt Dooley, deputising for the unavailable Martin Brennan, was accompanied by club president, Jimmy Byrne. Team: Murty Coonan and Seán Scanlon were 2 up when called in on the 17th.Also playing were Tommy O’ Neill and Seamus O’ Connor, Tom Staunton and Shamus Malone, Donie Walsh and John Kelly, Christy Comerford and Michael Doheny.
BRENNAN GOLD STRIKE: There was a great turnout of  lady and men golfers on Wednesday 1st May  with 38 teeing off in the SENIORS’ TEAM CLASSIC. ROAD RESURFACING: Just to acknowledge the excellent work of everyone associated with the road resurfacing from the main Kilkenny Rd to the golf entrance gates which was completed yesterday 1st May.
LOWER BRANCH PRUNING:  The ongoing work to trim, prune and generally tidy up  the lower branches of spinneys  and trees over  recent  years continues  with the laurel border between the 7th and 9th fairways being done in the last few weeks. Pruning of lower branches continues on the ditch adjacent to the 13th teebox and stand alone trees in  the rough to the  left of the 13th fairway as well.Compliments to course manager Michael Doheny and his very good team.

MEN’S ALL-IRELAND FOURBALL:  Comer were beaten 3 – 2 on Sunday 21st April in the Leinster 4ball competition. Comer won 2 matches away but unfortunately lost both home games on the 18th, after 2 very competitive matches. Away wins for Shamus Malone/ Matt Dooley and Seamus O Connor/ Anthony Gilroy put Comer in a strong position { both 3 up } but  on the day, Mt Wolseley ran out deserving winners. SENIORS’ OUTING: A fine cohort of  golfers assembled in  Athy on Monday, 8th April for the seniors’ first outing of 2019 played over 18 holes. SENIORS: 29 golfers played in the 16 hole team classic on Wednesday, 10th April. Scoring was very good. The bright day and very gentle easterly breeze was a big plus for players. Today saw placing on the fairway only, so  accuracy, especially off the tees, was well rewarded. Inter Club Team Competition: Well done to Castlecomer Ladies who beat Carrick on Suir in The Intermediate Cup on Thursday 4th April, in Kilkenny Golf Club. The team were as follows: first out was Ita Madigan who won on the 13th, Maureen Norton won  on the the 16th and  Theresa Manning won on the 15th while Jo Costigan  was 3 up and Caroline Conway was 1 up when they were called in.  Congratulations to the team and to their  team managers Noreen Kinsella and Ellen Phelan.
LADIES REVIVE ACTIVE:       Best of luck to our ladies and  team managers Ita Madigan and  Margaret O’ Keeffe in the Ladies Revive Active match which takes places on Sunday 14th April at 1.30p.m. against  Gowran Golf Club.
Thursday, 11th April:  After a six month winter break, the  Thursday 18 Hole Men’s Open Stableford  Singles makes a very welcome return to the 2019 golfing calendar  next Thursday, 11th April . This is a competition which has proved popular with visitors and members alike and no doubt its return every Thursday from now till the end of September will be popularly received by golf lovers everywhere. Visitors at €15 per round represents great value. Thursday, 11th coincides with the commencement of play at the US Masters, at Augusta so no better  date to play a round of golf at Castlecomer golf club and still enjoy  coverage of the Masters later in the evening. The golf season has truly arrived.
SENIORS: Thirty four golfers played in the 16h classic on Wednesday, 3rd April. There was a  strong, cold northerly wind throughout but golfers finished just in time to avoid the commencement of afternoon hail showers.The testing conditions provided a stiff challenge and in that regard the winning team of Murty Coonan (12), Ger Comerford (23) and Noreen Kinsella (24) fared best with 79 pts, followed by Christy Comerford (14), Noel Brennan (21) and Jim Doran (23) in second place on 68 pts, while not far behind in 3rd place on 67 pts were Donie Walsh (15), Des Murphy (25) and Gerry O’ Neill (27).

Attention: 9 Hole scramble commences on Tues 9th April at 5.30hrs. All members and non-members welcome. GUI handicap not required (€5 for non members)

ALL-IRELAND FOURBALL: Congratulations to our Men’s All-Ireland Fourball team, managed by Pat Haughton, on their great 3-0 victory over Carlow GC in the first round played on Saturday 30th March. We comfortably won the first two matches at home and the first match away, and were performing well is the other matches when they were called in. Ladies Get into Golf 2019:  Castlecomer Golf Club will host an information/registration evening on Friday 5th April, at 7.30pm. in the Clubhouse  All are welcome.Sessions start on Monday evening 8th April for 6 weeks. This is an excellent opportunity to take up golf and meet new people.
Ladies Spring League: The final date has been extended almost two weeks to Friday 12th April. Please have all matches played by that date as no further extension will be allowed.

SENIORS: The first “major” of the year, the Bog Oak Trophy, was played over 16 holes on Wednesday, 27th March in summer like conditions. Thirty three golfers competed for honours and in one of the most hotly contested Bog Oak competitions in recent years, only two points separated the “magnificent seven” prizewinners.Congratulations to everyone who played on the day and no doubt the tremendous quality of the golf played reflected both the excellent form of the players and near perfect weather and course conditions.
