The Junior Season is coming to a close, with the Final Saturday of Lessons taking place on Saturday 28th of October. It’s been a successful season with over 100 different junior girls and boys participating in the Saturday lessons with Sean. This has helped lead to a healthy influx of new junior members to the club. Our Junior club teams didn’t have the success of recent years, however, our junior section was well represented in the successful Barton Cup team with both Junior Captain Luke and Bobby Todd holding their spots throughout the Summer / Autumn campaign. Castlecomer Community School were able to enter both a Junior & Senior golf team at Carlow GC & Esker Hills last week, both teams fully comprising our Junior members.

28th Aug 2023. Captain Michael Furlong’s Prize
Club Captain Michael Furlong hosted his very successful Captain’s Prize Competition over the last two weekends with over 170 members playing. The course was in excellent condition over the two weekends, thanks to the great work of over green-keeping staff and volunteers . The final round took place on Saturday 26th August, with the top 48 from the first round assigned tee times on the day. The final groups out on the course experienced the worst of the weather conditions over the final 9 holes, but that did not deter the overall winner Ciaran O’Neill who shot a wonderful final round score of 65 nett, which gave him an excellent overall winning score of 133 nett . Ciaran was a very popular winner, and in his acceptance speech he thanked Captain Michael for his great contribution to the club, and he said it was a dream come through for him to win his Captain’s Prize.
Ciaran also thanked club member Jimmy Byrne for his golf coaching and mentoring when he joined the club as a juvenile member.
Captain Michael was joined by his wife Margaret, a club member and former Lady Captain, and members of his family from his native Wexford , as well as a large number of members for a most enjoyable presentation night in the club. Captain Michael does a huge amount of work with the volunteer group and club teams in the club and we hope he enjoys the rest of his year as our club captain.

21st Aug 2023. Junior & Juvenile News.
The Junior Masters Competition hosted by the club last week was a huge success. Starting on bank holiday Monday it included visitors from many local clubs with 43 juniors participating. Over the following three days 30 juniors battled it out for the trophy, which was won by Dean Lyons. The event generated substantial entry fees and over the four days the kitchen and bar area of the club was quite busy catering for participants, supporters and organisers of the event. The many juniors participating created a good atmosphere around the clubhouse and on the course during the week.
On Friday 11th of August nine players represented the club in the esteemed Carlow Boys competition. The club actually had the highest representation numbers of all participating clubs. It was a fantastic week for Junior golf in the club. The club again would like to extend its thanks to Junior Convenor Del Todd and his committee on the huge volume of work they undertook on the club’s behalf during a very busy week.

31st July. Our Club’s 45th Annual Open Week/Festival of Golf, which concluded on Sunday 30th July, was a great success. Our Open Week Festival of Golf was very well supported by members and visitors alike. As always the course was in great condition despite the recent inclement weather. We applaud the hard working staff for their efforts in keeping the course to such a high standard. Delia O Donohoe and Mary Brophy coordinated the front desk and with the help of the members ensured the smooth running of the event. Huge work goes on behind the scenes in order for the occasion to be successful and we thank all involved, in particular the many loyal sponsors that consistently support Castlecomer Golf Club. Visitors and members also enjoyed the excellent food served by Lukazs and his team in the newly opened ‘Foxglade Restaurant’ in our clubhouse. NOTICE: Friday’s heavy rain caused significant damage to pathways and bunkers. A contractor began work today and we hope to have diggers and dumpers on the course for the next few days. This essential work will require the closure of the course. It is unrealistic to expect paid contractors to stop and start to facilitate golfers. We hope this work will enable buggies to be used and many of the bunkers to come back into play. The course will close from Wednesday to Friday inclusive. Thank you for your cooperation.
14/07/2023 Breakfast is available tomorrow morning from 9.30am in the Foxglade Restaurant.
14/07/2023 Due to the torrential rain in Castlecomer this afternoon and with more rain forecast there is uncertainty at the moment on whether the golf course will open tomorrow. As a result the Top 30 Donal McInerney Memorial Singles will be rescheduled and played at later date. If the course is open a stableford singles will be held instead of the Top 30 singles. Members will be informed of the course status in the morning.

7th June 2023. Congratulations to the Barton Shield and Duggan Cup teams who both defeated Kilkenny this evening.
5th June 2023.
Castlecomer JB Carr team win county final after another tense and exciting match in the second leg against a very competitive Kilkenny team. All five games were nail-biting affairs with the lead fluctuating regularily in each. At the halfway stage Cadtlecomer were behind in most games. However a stirring fight back was to commence over the back nine holes with Castlecomer clinching the match overall when they won the first three games on the course. Tommy O’Neill and Ollie Gleeson came back from a two deficit to clinch the first game for the team on the 16th green. John Phelan and Michael O’Connor also had a great battle with their opponents before winning their match on the 18th green. Christy Comerford and Tom Mooney also completed a great comeback from two down at one stage to win their match on the 18th also. This win then confirmed Castlecomer as JB Carr county champions for 2023. Andy Cleere and Marty O’Shea were level on the 18th hole when called in. Seamus O’Connor and Michael Doheny had reduced a substantial deficit to just one and were on the 18th hole when called in also. Congratulations to all the team members and a special thanks to their shrewd and dedicated manager Martin Brennan. The team will now play Offally champions Tullamore in the next round.
29th May 2023. Congratulations to all the Classic prize winners. The Classic was a huge success with 120 teams participating. 17th April 2023. Men’s Junior Cup
The Junior Cup team played Kilkenny in a local Derby match on Sunday in glorious sunshine, which was welcome following the recent heavy rainfall. The match was close with Kilkenny coming out on top 3-2 in a closely fought match. Castlecomer had home advantage and following a loss in the first game, secured wins in games 2 and 3 at home. This meant that Castlecomer needed to win one of the away games to secure an overall win in the match. Both games were close with a loss on 18 in the 2nd and on the 20th in the other match. Although disappointed to lose, the match was close and could have gone either way. Best of luck to Kilkenny in the future rounds of the competition.
