Juniors News
Captains Prize 14th Oct 2023
Last Saturday 14th October saw a successful staging of Luke O Brien Petersons Junior Captains Prize with 30 Junior members taking part on the course, while another 25 took part in a skills challenge with Sean on the Practice Fairway. The Captains Prize was won by Kilkenny City native Jack Holohan, a new member to us just this year.

The Junior Season is coming to a close, with the Final Saturday of Lessons taking place on Saturday 28th of October.  It’s been a successful season with over 100 different junior girls and boys participating in the Saturday lessons with Sean. This has helped lead to a healthy influx of new junior members to the club. Our Junior club teams didn’t have the success of recent years, however, our junior section was well represented in the successful Barton Cup team with both Junior Captain Luke and Bobby Todd holding their spots throughout the Summer / Autumn campaign. Castlecomer Community School were able to enter both a Junior & Senior golf team at Carlow GC & Esker Hills last week, both teams fully comprising our Junior members.

Barton Cup Final:  Our Barton Cup team was to eventually lose out in the second leg of the final played in Castlecomer on Saturday the 7th of October. The team put in a gallant performance in endeavoring to overcome the first-leg deficit, but their best efforts on the day fell just short. The final result was confirmed when Ardee GC won the first match after a tight game on the 18th green. All our team pairings played well on the day and the team was unlucky to lose out to a very good Ardee team in the end. Hard luck to our team manager Michael Curry and all the team members on their magnificent achievement in reaching the final of the Barton Cup competition. The Barton cup is one of the longest established and most prestigious competitions in Interclub golf. Manager Michael and all the team members have through their dedicated commitment in finishing runners up in this competition, that started out with over one hundred and thirty teams, have brought great honour to our club. All members in our club congratulate the team and manager on their performances in the Barton Cup, which has been a great source of pride to both themselves and Castlecomer Golf Club.

2nd Oct 2023. BARTON CUP FINAL.

Our Barton Cup team play the second leg of the final against Ardee Golf Club on Saturday next the 7th of October in Castlecomer. The team have a huge challenge on their hands to overcome the substantial deficit as a result of the performance of the Ardee team in the first leg.The home advantage proved very beneficial to the Ardee team in gaining this advantage. However our team can also utilize use this advantage to their benefit much the same. All our home performances have been excellent in the many successful rounds played to reach the final.A repeat of this form and the very obvious ability of our team members can still overcome the deficit in the second leg of the final. All in the club extend best wishes to team manager Michael Curry and his players on Saturday and know that the team will give the same commitment and effort that has been the hallmark of their successful run to reach the final.
24th Sept 2023. BARTON CUP FINAL.
Unfortunately things did not go our team’s way in the first leg of the final away to Ardee GC last Saturday 23th September. Despite some good golf and a valiant effort by our team players on the day, the Ardee team played some exceptional quality golf to win all games played. The majority of the games were only decided on the final few holes played. A little bit of luck here or there could have changed some of the games in our teams favour. However our home record during the competition has been excellent and our team will as usual give their best efforts to overcome the deficit. The second leg will take place in Castlecomer on Saturday 7th October.

The final round took place on Saturday 26th August, with the top 48 from the first round assigned tee times on the day. Barton Cup v Bunclody GC
The club Barton Cup team progressed to a Leinster regional area semi final with a great  win over a very good Bunclody team on Saturday 22nd July. Despite the away  draw in the tie, which  gave Bunclody three home games to just two to Castlecomer at home, the team performed superbly  to overcome this disadvantage. Congratulations  to team  manager Michael Curry and all the team members on their excellent win and all in the club  wish them continued success  in the competition.
Club Junior Report.
A busy season of Junior golf in Castlecomer with an average of fifty juniors undertaking lessons each Saturday, under the tutelage of PGA professional Sean O’Donoghue. The lessons have proved popular with the junior members and over eighty in all have participated to date. OurJunior Inter club teams have been eliminated from all competitions. However, there were some excellent performances by junior teams, especially in the Inter club team qualifier in Portarlington, where the team finished fourth best of eighteen clubs. Although the team did not qualify for finals, there was a great sense of satisfaction from the outing as Luke O’Brien Peterson shot an impressive two over gross score on the day. Many different junior members got the chance to represent the club in these competitions and all enjoyed the experience. The junior club also entered a new fun format event run by Golf Ireland, the Junior Sixes.Three boys and three girls represented the club in a qualifying event in Carlow Golf Club in this competition. Although they did not qualify for the next round, they acquitted themselves well and enjoyed the event thoroughly. As a result some friendly matches have been arranged with some local clubs. An under 15 team challenge match has also been arranged with Mt Wolseley Golf Club. The Junior Masters and Junior Open have been arranged for a week in early August. 17th April 2023. Men’s Junior Cup

The Junior Cup team played Kilkenny in a local Derby match on Sunday in glorious sunshine, which was welcome following the recent heavy rainfall. The match was close with Kilkenny coming out on top 3-2 in a closely fought match. Castlecomer had home advantage and following a loss in the first game, secured wins in games 2 and 3  at home. This meant that Castlecomer needed to win one of the away games to secure an overall win in the match. Both games were close with a loss on 18 in the 2nd and on the 20th in the other match. Although disappointed to lose, the match was close and could have gone either way. Best of luck to Kilkenny in the future rounds of the competition.
