COURSE NEWS: Despite the recent spell of heavy rain, the course remains in excellent condition. The hollow coring on the greens carried out on a Monday and Tuesday two weeks ago was a tremendous success. The greens and the course in general are a credit to Victor Smyth on the management team responsible for the course, also course manager, Michael Doheny and the course staff who take a great pride in their work. The opportunity  is timely now to compliment everyone who plays on the course and who repair their plug marks on the greens, thus ensuring the greens are kept in mint condition. Repairing divots out the course continue to be attended to really well and sanding the tee box divots are well attended to also.
MEN’S GOLFER OF THE YEAR: Congratulations to Victor Smyth for winning the prestigious golfer-of -the-year title for 2022. A closer look at the Order of Merit Golfer of the Year form is currently on display in the men’s locker room opposite the computer. Well done to all this year’s contenders for making it so competitive and most interesting as the months went by. A word of thanks to competition secretary, Eamonn Breen and also to Noel Rothwell who gave reliable back-up to Eamonn when required.

MEN’S CLUB MATCHPLAY SINGLES:  Congratulations to Adam Dempsey who had a great win in the men’s club singles matchplay final on Sunday week. The wet conditions on the day were no obstacle to  two very in form players. The worthy finalists served up a feast of golf. Ciarán can hold his chin up highl on reaching the singles final. In the very popular mixed matchplay played earlier in the autumn Ciarán and  Betty Owens were crowned the 2022 club mixed foursomes champions by beating Marty O’ Shea and Patricia Brennan. Finally a special word of thanks to Shay Kennedy for coordinating the men’s club singles, fourball and foursomes matchplay competitions once again this year.

1st Oct 2022. It was an early start for our Mixed Foursomes team as they headed for Athlone G.C on Thursday September 29. A contingent of players and supporters arrived at the midland club and were greeted with  dazzling, autumn sunshine . It was truly an amazing, emotional morning for all in attendance. Our team included Nuala Mahon/ Mark Shortall , Margaret O’ Keeffe / Kieran Byrne, Honoria Fogarty/Michael Daly, L.C. Helen Murphy/ Adam Dempsey, Joan Brennan/ Victor Smyth.  The pairings were given final words of encouragement by manager Mr. Nicky Walsh, while Committe Member Ms. Paticia Doheny (in loco Ms. Theresa Manning) took care of the all-important paper work. In the background was Vice Captain Mr. Michael Furlong who had organsied a ball spotting group that   relayed results hole by hole to Mr. Fergal O’ Neill who in turn posted to our main club WhatsApp platform. Consequentially all members were kept up to date with the progress of play in the Quarter Final session.
The players were announced and each of our men delivered quality ball down the first fairway, ideally positioned for the ladies shot to the green. Each pairing found their rhythm and fantastic golf shots were played. The greens were slick and difficult to read but amazing putts were holed from distance.
As with most big events, the matches went down to the wire and yet again Castlecomer was faced with the challenge of the 19th hole. With only a putt of a ball separating the sides , it was Milltown G.C. that took the spoils and advanced to the semi final.
Players, managers and supporters from Drumgoole were heartbroken. The team had given 100% from the first round and manager Nicky praised each one for the commitment shown throughout the campaign.  We would like to thank managers Theresa  and Nicky, team and panel of players for bringing such excitement to the club and we look forward to more of the same next season.
The journey home seemed longer than usual.
