SENIORS: Seán Scanlon’s Seniors’ Captain’s Prize took place on Wednesday 4th September. The best turn out of the year by a stretch – with 59 ladies and gents playing – had a most enjoyable day’s golf while competing for the seniors’ most important competition of the year. By and large the day was fine but mother nature also managed to send a few fleeting blustery showers into the mix. The course itself was in truly magnificent condition. The scene was set for some really good scoring and the golfers duly delivered. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who honoured the occasion with their presence. JUNIORS: It was a case of what might have been for our Irish Junior Boys’ Interclub team. They narrowly missed out by just one point in the Leinster final in Castlewarden last week. The team that scorched to the final with a win in their qualifying section in Callan in late July did have a consolation of a silver medal but can’t help be frustrated on missing out so narrowly on a berth in the All Ireland final which will be held in Castle Dargan in Sligo later this year. They were second of thirteen teams. Tullamore golf club now represent Leinster in the final. The team consisted of David Allen,Liam Doyle, Louis Todd, Conor Brophy and Cathal O Reilly. Team Manager, Del Todd.Congratulations to the team and manager on doing so well.
Ladies Inter Club Competition: On Saturday 31st August our Castlecomer Ladies took part in the Mid Leinster Final of the ILGU Senior Foursomes against Courtown Golf Club at Bunclody Golf Club. It was a tremendously close match that finally came down to the final putt on the 19th green.Breda Phelan and Maria Downey got Castlecomer Golf Club off to a great start winning the first match 2up. Courtown then took the second match beating our Joan Brennan and Honoria Fogarty to even up the match. That left the pressure on our final pair of Emer Foley and Loretta Mansfield who battled to the very end only to lose on the 19th green. Everyone in Castlecomer Golf Club is extremely proud of our Senior Foursomes team and managers for getting to the final. Team: Breda Phelan, Maria Downey, Honoria Fogarty, Joan Brennan, Emer Foley and Loretta Mansfield. Subs: Maureen Norton, Ita Madigan and Margaret Furlong. Managers: Betty Byrne and Joan Brennan.

DUGGAN CUP: Holders of the Duggan Cup in 2017 and 2018, Castlecomer were beaten by Baltinglass in Edenderry on Sunday in the semi final. The teams were level with two wins each with the final match being decided at the 19th. hole. Unfortunately for Castlecomer, it was Baltinglass who had that little bit of luck that swung it their way to produce a 3 – 2 result for them. Castlecomer fought gallantly but it was not to be. Despite the disappointment of being knocked out of the competition, team manager Martin Brennan can reflect on a really good run in the Duggan Cup this year. Both Martin and his team can be mightily proud of going so far and flying the flag for Castlecomer in men’s inter club team golf.

COURSE RECORD: A significant piece of golfing history was created by Michael Buggy recently on the hallowed turf of Castlecomer golf club when he smashed the course record by a wonderful 3 shots while on his way to winning the 18 hole open singles on Thursday 18th July.
His original 67 gross course record has stood the test of time for twelve years no less, but boy did his summer 2019 record round of 64 gross remind us all, if ever we needed reminding, of Michael’s prodigious natural talent and his love of and dedication to the game of golf . Michael’s eagle, seven birdies, nine pars, one bogie scorecard read as follows: front nine, 4 4 3 4 4 5 3 4 3 (out in 34 shots) and back nine, 4 3 4 2 5 2 3 3 4 ( in 30 shots) totalling 64 gross. Michael currently plays off a -1 handicap.
We take this opportunity to warmly congratulate Michael, also all the Buggy family and all of Michael’s coaches and mentors over the years as we acknowledge his truly magnificent historic course record.
No doubt, Michael’s golfing talent and very high standard of play over many years will continue to inspire all of Castlecomer’s golfers but particularly our young junior golfers who, week by week, continue to make excellent progress learning the rudiments of the game at our Club.

Murty was thrilled to accept the trophy from former lady captain, Mary Jo Doyle, wife of the late Michael. Mary Jo and her family have been great supporters of this competition. Michael Doyle, captain in 1988, is remembered very fondly in Castlecomer golf club.
