“19th HOLE”:    Remember, whether your round of golf is  great or  average or if  you’re having  an off day, if you possibly can try to prioritise visiting and supporting  the bar. Irrespective of the mention of alcohol, there’s fantastic alternatives in  coffee, guaranteed home flavoured soup or dinners and wait for the punch line – they still constitute and  define  the 19th hole! Across the golfing world over many decades and even possibly particularly more  relevant to this new decade too where the virtual is impinging on the real world, the 19th hole with  the chat and banter  uplifts and has a unique role to play. For the genuinely “time poor” brigade, 30 minutes at the 19th could be the makings of the other 23 1/2 hours in the day!! These indeed are the glory years of Castlecomer golf club so many, many thanks that we all continue to  embrace them, appreciate them, contribute to them and continue to “light a candle” so to speak . Happy golfing in 2020 to all our members.
GOLF GAME FLEXIBILITY:  Remember the great flexibility our course offers – 18 holes, 14 holes, 11 holes, 9 holes, and if you’re tight for time, tee off at the 12th and just play the concluding 7 holes. It’s an inviting prospect any way you look at the options for golf to all our existing and prospective new male and lady members  and juveniles at Castlecomer golf club in this new decade.
SENIORS “CALLED  TO THE BAR!”: The seniors it must be acknowledged are deeply appreciative of bar manager Louise Stapleton and Alison for beverages of all kinds and soup and dinners that are the very best of home cooking. Yesterday’s vegetable soup had no equal and the bangers and mash or lasagna dinners were so tasty the boys nearly ate the enamel off the plates!
SENIORS: New Seniors captain Tony Cooper welcomed the big turnout of golfers on Wednesday 8th January at the clubhouse at 9.30am and wished everyone health and happiness throughout 2020. The weather proved to be a real bonus as it was bright, calm and relatively mild. The course was in exceptional condition, mind you 2 or 3 weeks of fairly dry weather has been a help too apart from the great work of course manager Michael Doheny, greenkeeper Colin Hughes and staff.  RESULTS: 1 John Kelly (15), Richie Hogan (17), Tom Casey (24) 68 pts,  2 Murty Coonan13, Brendan Morrissey 21, Mick Mc Grath (26), 67 pts, 3 Tom Staunton (15), Seán Scanlan (16), Eddie Fogarty (28) 66 pts. Tony welcomed new seniors member Brendan Morrissey who got a really warm round of applause and welcome. Brendan was a member in Castlecomer for  years and is a brother of  former lady captains Kathleen Ryan, Nancy Conway (Leo’s wife) and  Alice Rice RIP (Paul’s mum) and the late inspirational former captain and president, Mikey Morrissey (RIP).
LOTTO:Monday 6th Jan 2020 . No winner of lotto jackpot of €7,800. Numbers drawn 13,14,23,27. Next weeks jackpot €8,000.                                                      WINTER TEAM LEAGUE REPORT:  Round 5 of the league finished up yesterday, Sunday 5th January after commencing on Monday 23rd December. Round 5 was played over 14 days during the Christmas holiday period and because players could play as often as they wished, their best scores were recorded, thanks to the tremendous work of Eamonn Breen at the office. With clement weather into the bargain, round five was excellently supported by the 9 participating teams.
It was to be expected that scores would improve and obliging on that front were 7 teams who recorded their best scores to date in the 5 rounds played, namely teams  B,   C,   E,   F,   G,    H    and    I.  The other  2 teams   A    and    D   slipped very slightly down the points table as a result.
      The LEAGUE POINTS TABLE now reads: C   586,      H   584,      G   584,      A   583,      I   578,      F   570,      E   564,      B   559,   D   555.    Wow! Just 3 points separate the top 4 teams!
Round 6 commences today, Monday 6th January and weather permitting will run up to next Sunday, 12th January. Enjoy every minute of it. We’ve had great street leagues etc down through the decades in Castlecomer, but the current team league format beats all its predecessors and great credit is due to those people who contributed to its origin and fantastic tweaking since year 1 during the teen years.
With the full details on the drop down menu on the right above, you can check your fellow team mates’ and other teams’ progress easily. Also a word of thanks to fellow member Seamus Malone for great technical assistance in this area.

GREENS: A reminder to repair plug marks on the greens especially if it’s your own but also thanks for repairing one or two more if you happen to spot them. It’s well worth it cause we all appreciate wonderful greens.Go raibh maith agaibh.
TEAM WINTER LEAGUE: After 4 rounds completed as at 22nd December, a number of very interesting stats have emerged in what to date has been an outstanding success. The leaders team A have averaged 29 pts per player per round while team B at the foot of the table have averaged 27 pts. The clear message for the second half of the league is that every team is in with a serious chance of making the four team final in February. A second stat to
emerge is that of the  144 posted scores 31 scores have equalled or bettered 30 pts. This figure equates to 21.5 percent.
The league’s outstanding score has been that of John Lacey with 36 pts. Each team’s top scorer to date reads: Team A Tom Mooney 34 pts, team B Pat Haughton 33 pts, team C Tom Peterson  33 pts, team D  Pat Graham  32 pts, team E Gerry Irwin  31 pts, team F Brendan Dooley and James Daly  30 pts, team G John Lacey  36 pts, team H Matt Dooley and Marty O’ Shea  31 pts.
The league table after round 4  dated 22nd December reads: A on 464 pts,   C on 463 pts,   G on 457 pts,   I on 454,   H on 452 pts,   F on 443 pts,   D on 442 pts, E on 438 pts and B on 435 pts.
Remember the top three teams qualify automatically for the final but will be joined by the wildcard team from the last round. Last year the wildcard team won the final. With the teams’ top four scores counting in the league, the final is a different proposition altogether with the top seven scores counting. It makes for a fascinating scenario. No wonder everyone is loving this wonderful team winter competition. Team spirit, comaraderie and lots of fun in the process, lets hope the very favourable weather of late continues well into January. Happy golfing everyone.

HEAD GREENKEEPER AND MEN’S CAPTAIN, PADDY CURRY RIP:  The  news of the death of Paddy Curry, husband of the late Kitty, son Michael and his wife Noreen and their children Paraic and Áine, daughters Ann and Mary and families and a wide circle of relatives and friends filtered through North Kilkenny and surrounds early on Sunday morning last with more than a tinge of sadness. Paddy’s loss is Heaven’s gain.
To recall the life, companionship, work and  contribution to Castlecomer golf club of  Paddy Curry, a true gentleman,  would fill volumes so bear with us as we recall a snapshot  of memories in our club.
Paddy is directly associated with our club through five decades namely the 70’s, 80’s 90’s, 00’s and 10’s. A tenure reserved for some but when you consider the head greenkeeping work of Paddy for close to 3 of those decades give or take, you learn to appreciate his possibly unparalleled contribution to the part that matters most ie  the golf course.
Paddy joined the golf club  at “The Lawn” in Drumgoole,in the second half of the 1970’s and after acquiring a love for playing the game, soon graduated into greenkeeping as well. Paddy availed of all the tuition and courses available for greenkeepers and also desired and respected the knowledge of many of the club’s  long serving members and also  of some   founder members too (Founded 1935).He craved learning and respected cooperation with others.  His love for and dedication to  his work and the game of golf and his desire for excellence, resulted in him establishing  a name  as a top class greenkeeper.
Castlecomer golf club   established itself as one of the finest nine hole parkland courses in Europe especially throughout the 80’s and 90’s when Paddy was in his prime.
The course opened as an 18 hole course in the spring of 2003 and Paddy served as head greenkeeper during this transition and at the start of the 18 hole course.  To give a precise date to Paddy’s retirement as head greenkeeper, would do Paddy an injustice as Paddy’s  role was to lend his considerable expertise as advisor to Donie Brophy, Ollie Holohan,  John Coogan and current greenkeeper Colin Hughes.
Paddy loved a great course and how many years was he up early before competitions mowing the greens and later in the day enjoying his game of golf? Paddy was responsible for many drainage works and their maintenance on  the course. He knew the sprinkling system like nobody  else in the Club and long after his retirement came back to get the sprinklers  up and running again during drouts. The number of trees Paddy sowed on the course is huge and if the saying that  a wise man sows an Oak, then Paddy had extraordinary wisdom that only now the Lord can repay. The trees, the drains, the sprinklers, the greens,  the fairways, the rough adds to a massive legacy on the course Paddy passes on us and future generations.
Paddy must have had a great relationship and comraderie   over many years with   so many  past captains,  committees, playing members and those  who gave of their  time to the course as well  like Seamus Farrell, Christy Lynch, Eamonn Boland, Donal Mc Inerney, Johnny Ryan, Terry Brennan and Michael Doheny over the  years. He was also blessed with a great sense of humour and encouraged everyone he met.
Paddy was a keen golfer and loved the team games be they singles, foursomes or fourball. and represented the Club in the J.B. Carr interclub competition.
Paddy was appointed captain of the golf club in 2009 and it was a truly  memorable year for Paddy, his wife Citty and all his family.
Paddy, like any dad, was so proud of his son Michael’s  many successes on the golf course, none more so than Michael going all the way to the quarter finals of the British Boys’ Golf Championships in the early 80’s and in more recent years also proud of the  golf of his daughter in law, Noreen and the  successes of his grandson, Paraic Curry playing and enjoying the game of golf and continuing the family tradition.
Paddy Curry, you have passed on a rich  legacy to your family, your golf Club, your relatives and your many many friends..
To Paddy’s family, our message is one of sincere sympathy and  great gratitude for Paddy’s life well lived and for his inspiration to us all.
May Paddy’s soul rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

Indeed Paschal is very fondly remembered and we all take this opportunity to send our deepest sympathy to his daughters Annette and Deirdre and his son Tom and their families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
MEN’S CLUB AGM: The  20th AGM of the Men’s Club took place in the Clubhouse on Wednesday 27th November. Outgoing captain, Martin O’ Neill chaired an excellent meeting. After the minutes of the 19th AGM were read, Martin called for a minutes silence in honour of members and former members who passed away this year. Martin generously acknowledged all those who contributed greatly to the smooth running of the Club right across the board. Martin  deservedly complimented competition secretary Eamonn Breen for his great commitment and dedication to the Club as well as course manager Michael Doheny and greenkeeper Colin Hughes for the tremendous state of the course all year. He complimented the work of the ” Get into Golf for Men” initiative by Seamie Brennan and his team. He also praised the work of Del Todd and his team promoting junior golf in our Club. He also thanked Club President, Jimmy Byrne for helping him greatly during the year.  Martin acknowledged the bar and catering transitioned early in the year but was glad that  the management committee appointed Louise Stapleton as Bar Manager. Louise has made  incremental progress on the catering front as well and her dinners to the seniors have been extended in recent weeks for everyone on  Saturdays and Sundays too. Incidentally Louise provides breakfasts, finger food, soup, toasted sandwiches etc as well as main course mentioned earlier. More  members are encouraged  to support the  bar and catering and avail of the hospitality of Louise and her excellent staff.
Hon secretary Matt Dooley congratulated all the teams and managers on the inter club scene and also congratulated Stephen Daly  Captain’s Prize winner, Pat Comerford  President’s Prize winner, Jason Brennan  golfer of the year and the club matchplay champions Fergal O’ Neill  singles,  Fergal O’ Neill and Colin Dunne fourball,  Paddy Kehoe and Ger Comerford  foursomes and Marty O’ Shea and Jo Costigan mixed foursomes. Matt singled out scratch golfer Michael Buggy for breaking the course record during the year with a round of 64 in competition. Matt was glowing in his praise of outgoing captain Martin O’ Neill who put in a great year as captain and whose stewartship excelled and was matched by many a  long hour improving clubhouse  facilities etc and this work done by Martin is greatly appreciated. The volunteerism that we inherited from previous years flourished under Martin’s watch as well. The new practice enclosure opened recently is just one of the many examples of volunteerism.
Hon treasurer Liam Mooney gave   a detailed  written report on the finances of the Men’s Club and sufficeth to say the 2019 accounts were very good. In a nutshell, more golfers, in all the categories, played golf in Castlecomer in 2019  –  alluding to which  it must also be acknowledged, we had favourable weather all year.
Incoming captain, Seán Scanlon praised  captain Martin O’ Neill and the outgoing officers and committee for their great  work this year.  He   looked forward to working with everyone in the coming year. During  his address he  announced John Lacy as his vice captain.  Seán reminded everyone of the Joint Club AGM on Thursday 12th December at 8pm in the Clubhouse. COURSE RECORD: A significant piece of golfing history was created by Michael Buggy recently on the hallowed turf of Castlecomer golf club when he smashed the course record by a wonderful  3 shots while on his way to winning the  18 hole open singles on Thursday 18th July.
His original 67 gross course record has stood the test of time for twelve years no less, but boy did his summer 2019 record round of 64 gross remind us all, if ever we needed reminding, of Michael’s  prodigious natural talent and his love of and  dedication to the game of golf . Michael’s eagle, seven birdies, nine  pars, one bogie scorecard read as follows: front nine, 4 4 3 4 4 5 3 4 3 (out in 34 shots) and  back nine, 4 3 4 2 5 2 3 3 4 ( in 30 shots) totalling 64 gross. Michael currently plays off a -1 handicap.
We take this opportunity to warmly congratulate Michael, also all the Buggy family and all of Michael’s coaches and mentors over the years as we acknowledge his  truly magnificent historic course record.
No doubt, Michael’s  golfing talent and very high standard of play over many years will continue to  inspire all of Castlecomer’s golfers but particularly our young junior golfers who, week by week,  continue to make excellent progress learning the rudiments of the game at our Club.
