The Castlecomer mens club Moore Cup team played Mount Temple golf club in the final of the Michael Moore cup competition in Portarlington golf club on Saturday the 13th September.
The team were endeavouring to win the competition for a second time and defend the title they won in 2024. The match consisting of seven singles match play games provided a very close and exciting encounter. As the games progressed, fortunes ebbed and flowed right throughout the match. With both clubs winning one game each early on,t he result was to hinge on the remaining five games on the course.
These games then provided a great sense of excitement as both teams battled hard to try and win the match. The advantage was to sway in favour of both clubs at times as all the players gave their best efforts to win the necessary games required. The supporters of both clubs present were treated to some nail biting finishes in the final holes, as the match result looked in doubt to the very final holes of play. The experience of last years victory by the Castlecomer team members was to stand them in good stead as the team members held their nerve to win four of the final games in play to become champions for a second successive year. The closeness of the games and the eventual victory for the Castlecomer team was only decided in tie hole playoffs in two games.
Congratulations to long standing team manager Pat Haughton and all the team members on an outstanding achievement, in winning this prestigious competition in successive years.
The manager and team members were presented with their winners trophies at a most pleasant and superbly organised dinner function organised by competition host club Portarlington.
Castlecomer team players that represented the club in the final were: Gerry Mealy, Michael O’Connor , Ned Mahon, Michael Furlong, Eamonn Breen, Martin Brennan and Seamus O’Connor.
