This weekend saw a mixed bag for golfers in Castlecomer GC, we crashed out of the Junior Cup losing out to a strong Enniscorthy team. It’s one that got away though, as we definitely have the golfers to go all the way in this competition, we just needed to get a rub of the green on Saturday, but sadly Lady Luck was not smiling on us this weekend. This team is made of stern stuff however and most, if not all of the panel, will be back next year to right the wrongs of this year. Team manager Michael Buggy said in his post match presser, said “we had a great run, but ultimately, the three guys who were on holiday, proved an insurmountable obstacle for us, but I would like to thank the lads for their commitment and I wish them all the best for the coming season. There is the nucleus of a really, really strong Junior Cup side within the club, so hopefully that will bear fruition in the near future”.
At home the ever dependable Rob Brennan won his game quite easily on 15 and the in-form Jason Brennan, was also victorious winning on 13. Jason’s form was to hold up as he emerged as winners, not only in his match in the Junior Cup, but also in the Junior Scratch Cup the following day, more of that anon. The third member of the home side was Colum Lynch and while he didn’t have his best stuff on Saturday, he will no doubt be back to his fighting best next time around. Away from home is always an incredibly difficult ask, and so it proved for Louis Todd and Billy Rowe, both losing in tight matches. . While it’s always disappointing to lose, Enniscorthy just about shaded the match overall and were deserving winners. We wish them well in the coming months as this competition reaches its conclusion. Last word to the manager “I am immensely proud of everyone involved, the time, commitment and often financial cost, which more often than not goes unnoticed, proves the strong club ethos we have in Castlecomer GC. Whatever I asked of the panel, they gave back tenfold and this will surely stand them in good stead going forward. They are as good a bunch of lads that are in the club and they are what makes our place special.”
