18th Aug. Michael Buggy Captain’s Prize 

The top 60 players from Round 1 last weekend qualified to play Round 2 of Michael Buggy Captain’s Prize on Sunday 17th August,and after a Shotgun start, provided by club member Paddy McGuinness, play got underway at 9am. The top 18 after Round 2 on Sunday then played a further 9 holes in the afternoon to decide the winner of the Captain’s Prize and all nett overall prizes winners. In glorious sunshine and following some excellent golf in front of a large number of members, Michael Manogue emerged as the winner with a great 45 hole score of 172 nett. This was a tremendous achievement by Michael as he also won the Captains Prize last year. Michael is a long time member of the club and is a stalwart on many inter club teams and was a very popular winner. 

Captain Michael thanked all club members that participated in his Captains Prize, and with the course in pristine condition, he thanked our head greenkeeper Liam O’Hara and our greenkeeping staff, and all club volunteers for their work on the course. He congratulated his prize winner Michael Manogue on his unique achievement in winning the Captains prize two years in a row. He also congratulated all other prize winners. Captain Michael was joined by his family members and friends as well as a large number of members for a most enjoyable presentation night in the club. Captain Michael does a huge amount of work with our club committees, while playing for the club and  supporting all our inter club teams, and we hope he enjoys the rest of his year as our club captain.

Morrissey Cup Final v Abbeyleix GC
Our mens Morrissey’s cup team contested the final of this competition in Abbeyleix golf club on Saturday 16th August. This competition had been organised by Abbeyleix golf club to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Abbeyleix town.The host club team had also qualified for the final, and with home advantage in the five singles match play games,they were always going to provide a stern challenge for our team players.Despite a good win in one of the early games, our team was to eventually lose out to a very good Abbeyleix team.Our team players were unlucky to lose out in the very final holes of some closely contested games that could have gone either way .Congratulations to the Abbeyleix team on their win and well done to the club on a well administered competition, that catered for a distinctive category of handicap not normally undertaken. The players on both teams thoroughly enjoyed their participation in the final .Hard luck to our Castlecomer team manager Martin Brennan and his panel of players on the day.The team did very well to qualify for the final of this inaugural competition.Team players were:Pat Haughton,Dick Farrell,Seamus Brennan,Tommy Brennan and Denis Brennan.
Club Matchplay Foursomes
Congratulations to Paul Rice and Shane Rice who won the Club Matchplay Foursomes. Paul and Shane defeated Pat Comerford and Michael Daly on the 19th hole after a great match.

11th Aug. Michael Buggy Captain’s Prize – Day 1

There was a great turn out of members for Day 1 of Michael Buggy Captain’s Prize played on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August. The course was in pristine condition, thanks to the hard work of our greenkeeping staff and volunteers.Leading after Day 1 is Michael J Brennan after shooting an excellent score of 63 nett, followed by Shane O’Neill on 66 nett and Martin G Brennan and Shay Kennedy on 67 nett.

Inter Club Report
South Leinster v Borris GC 
The men’s club South Leinster team played Borris golf club in a second round match on Sunday 10th August. Despite winning two of the home matches,  the team were to be eliminated as they lost all of the away games. Home advantage in the draw proved decisive for the Borris team, as although all the games were closely contested, they managed to win all four games.Hard luck to our team manager and all the team players, who as always gave their best efforts on the clubs behalf. Team members at home were Keith O’Neill, Roddy McMeyler and Michael McDonald.   Team members away were Brian Dermody,Paddy Neary, Sean Scanlan and Ned Mahon.

Mr. Ollie Maher

All club members were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of our club member Ollie Maher. Ollie was a great stalwart of our club and was a former Captain, and he will be sadly missed by all members. We pass on our deepest sympathy to his wife Mag, and all the Maher family at this sad time. As a mark of respect, all past club Captains, Presidents and a large number of members  provided a formal Guard of Honour at his funeral mass. Ar dhéis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.

8th Aug.  Congratulations to two club members who were recent winners in Scratch Cup events in other clubs.
Shane Coakley won the Kilkenny Junior Scratch Cup and Jonny Dowling won the Mount Juliet Intermediate Scratch Cup.

Michael Buggy’s Captain’s Prize

Michael Buggy’s Captain’s Prize will take place over two weekends.

Round 1: 9th/10th August.

Round 2: 16th/17th August.

This year’s format has changed.

The top 60 players from Round 1 will qualify to play Round 2 on Sunday 17th. (Shotgun start) 9am

Leinster U 15 Boys v Courtown GC
The Leinster Boys u 15 team played Courtown golf club in a 2nd round match on Friday 25th July.The match consisted of three singles match play games, all played on our own course. With each team winning one of the first two games played, the final game then became the decider.This proved to be a game of very high quality golf throughout and was only decided on the final holes of play.The Courtown player finally won the match for his team with a great birdie putt on the second last hole to secure victory for his team.The match was a credit to all the players participating with some great golf played throughout in a very competitive and sporting manner.Hard luck to our team manager Mark Shortall and the boys on the day.Team members were Shane O’Dowd, Andy Ryan and Adam Phelan.
 Moore Cup v Carlow GC
The club Moore Cup team played Carlow golf club in a quarter final match on Saturday the 26th July. With four games in Carlow and three games in Castlecomer the tie produced some very close and exciting games all through. The Castlecomer team eventually secured victory by winning two games at each venue to secure a place in the semifinal of this competition. Congratulations to team manager Pat Haughton and all the team players on another great win in this competition. Team members at home were Gerry Mealy, Michael O’Connor and Ned Mahon.  Team members away were  Michael Furlong, Martin Brennan , Seamus O’Connor and Eamonn Breen.
 Morrissey Cup V Coollattin GC
The club team played the second leg of their semi final match against Coollattin on Sunday the 27th July away in Coollattin.
The team having won all five games in the home semi final just required a win in one game to qualify for the final. The Coollattin team members, despite the major deficit from the first leg, put up a brave resistance and were to take the lead in many of the games early on. However, the Castlecomer team players were to rally strongly in most games and secured the victory overall when winning the first game on the seventeenth hole. Congratulations to team manager Martin Brennan and his team members on qualifying for the final of this competition to be played in Abbeyleix golf club in late August. Team members were Pat Haughton , Liam Mooney, Seamus Brennan, Tommy Brennan and Denis Brennan.

 Leinster seniors fourball. 
Our Leinster seniors fourball team played St Helen’s bay golf club in a third round match on Wednesday 16th July .With two fourball matches in each venue it was to provide a close and very competitive encounter. The Castlecomer team won one match and halved the second match in the two games played at home. As St Helen’s bay won the first match completed on their course, the result now hinged on the remaining match there. This game provided a match of very high quality golf with the result in doubt right to the last hole of play.The Castlecomer pair who had played top quality golf all through were unlucky to eventually lose out on the final hole. Hard luck to the team manager and all the panel members on their excellent performances in reaching the latter stages of the regional section of this very competitive competition..  Leinster Trophy
Our mens Leinster Trophy team played Wicklow golf club in a 4th round match on Sunday 20th of July. As Wicklow were the home team in this match they had four of the seven singles match play games on their own course. The games at both venues provided some top quality golf with the overall result in doubt right through to the final game. The Castlecomer team won two home games and one away game,  but were to lose the final game in play in Wicklow to be eliminated from the competition. Hard luck to team manager Nicky Walsh and players and well done on their performances in reaching the 4th round of the Leinster Trophy competition

Inter Club Report.
It was yet another busy and eventful week for our inter club teams in various competitions
 Cullen Cup versus Kilmashogue GC.
 Castlecomer mixed foursomes team played Kilmashogue golf club in the quarter final of this competition on Friday 11th of July.This match played in a scotch foursomes format,  consisted of two games in each club.Castlecomer set the foundation for victory by winning the two home games on our own course.The team confirmed victory when attaining the necessary half point in one of the two games played away at the Dublin teams home course.This was an excellent win for our team and they have now qualified for the semi final of the Cullen cup competition. Team members home were: Mark O’Dowda and Joan Brennan, Keith O’Neill and Freda Campion. Team members away:  Seamus O’Connor and Hannah Kelly, Ned Mahon and Nuala Mahon.
Men’s Junior Cup v Enniscorthy GC
 Our men’s junior cup team played Enniscorthy in the regional semifinal on Sunday 13th of July.This semi final provided a close and exciting encounter,  with some excellent golf played by both teams throughout. With both teams assured of winning two games each, Enniscorthy were to win the match when winning the third game played in Castlecomer to ensure victory in the match. Hard luck to team manager Michael Buggy and all his team members. The team had achieved some outstanding performances to reach the semi finals of a very high standard competition. Thanks is extended to the manager and his players for their commitment on the club’s behalf during the competition. Team members at home: Damien Knox ,Mark Shortall and Robert Brennan.  Team members away: Niall O’Sullivan and Victor Smyth.

South Leinster Trophy v Callan GC 
The mens club South Leinster team played Callan golf club in a first round match on Sunday 13th July. As the home team Castlecomer had four of the seven singles matches on their own course.This advantage was to prove decisive during the course of a very close and competitive match. Winning three home games, the Castlecomer team qualified their participation in the next round by winning one match away in Callan.The final four games to three games victory reflected the very competitive nature of the match that prevailed all through. Congrats to manager Sean Scanlan and his team members on a hard earned win. Team Members home. Keith O’Neill, Roddy McMeyler, Michael McDonald and Sean Scanlan. Team members away were: Ned Mahon, Brian Dermody and Paddy Neary.

Morrissey’s Cup v Coollattin GC 
This was a new competition organised by Abbeyleix golf club to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Abbeyleix town.Castlecomer was happy to accept an invitation to participate in this celebratory competition that catered for a handicap range not covered by most other inter club competitions. Our team consisted of five players, all playing singles match play, and were drawn against Coollattin in a two legged semi final.The first leg match was played in Castlecomer on Saturday 5th of July.The match produced some exciting games with a very good standard of play in evidence throughout. The Castlecomer team all played exceptionally well to eventually win all five games and take a decisive lead into the second leg match in Coollattin. Team members were: Pat Haughton,Liam Mooney, Seamus Brennan, Tommy Brennan and Denis Brennan. Team Manager was Martin Brennan 
 Barton Cup v Carlow GC
 The club’s  Barton Cup team played Carlow golf club in a 3rd round match on Sunday 6th of July. Carlow being drawn at home had three of the five games in Carlow.This was to eventually prove to be decisive, as with Castlecomer and Carlow both winning the first two games played,  the match was decided in the last game out in Carlow. Despite a valiant effort by the Castlecomer players,  Carlow clinched victory when winning the final game on the last hole played on their own course. Hard luck to all the Castlecomer players in.a match that could have gone either way.The team represented the club with distinction during their involvement in the Barton cup campaign. Thanks to team manager Mark O’Dowda and all panel members on their dedication and commitment throughout. Team members home: Michael Buggy and Nicky Walsh,  Warren Byrne and Robbie Brennan.  Team members away: Jason Brennan and John Joe Buggy,  Shane Coakley and Gavin Carrol,l Colum Lynch and Ciaran O’Neill.
 Boys Inter Club. 
Boys U 18 Regional Qualifier
Our boys under 18 inter club team travelled to Edenderry golf club on Thursday 3rd of July to participate in a regional qualifier. Competing against twenty other clubs on the day, it was always going to provide a great challenge for our team members. Each team consisted of five players ,each playing eighteen holes of golf in a stableford format,  with just one team to qualify for the All Ireland quarter finals The result was based on the best three aggregate cards from the five players on each team.Our boys returned an excellent total of 104 points for their best three cards. Despite this excellent effort, our team was to finish in a very creditable fourth position in the qualifier.Well done to our team members on their excellent performance overall in this high quality qualifying competition. Team members were Billy Rowe ,John Joe Buggy, Eoin Healy,Tommy Mulhall and Charlie Ryan.Team manager Mark Shortall. 
Leinster U 15 v Callan GC
Congratulations to our Leinster boys under 15 inter club team on a superb win in their first round match against Callan golf club on Friday 4th July. The match consisted of three singles match play games. After a very competitive match that produced some high quality golf from both teams’ players,our boys were to win two of the three games played to advance to the next round.Castlecomer team members were Shane O’ Dowd, Andy Ryan and Adam Phelan. 30th June. Inter Club Report
It was another busy and exciting weekend for our men’s Inter club teams, with two teams participating in Golf Ireland competitions.
 Leinster Trophy v Waterford GC
 The club mens Leinster Trophy team were in action against a very strong and competitive Waterford golf club team on Saturday 28th of June. With Waterford having four of the seven singles matches at home,it was to provide a stern challenge for our team members. However,  the Castlecomer team players rose to the challenge and qualified victory by winning two matches at each venue. All of the matches provided tense and exciting games , with the winning of two away games the key factor in the teams success. Congrats to team manager Nicky Walsh and his team members on another great win . Team members home were.: Warren Byrne, Shane Coakley, Adam Phelan and Conor B Kelly. Team members away were: Marty O’Shea,Paul Rice and Ciaran Kelly.
Leinster Seniors Fourball v Gowran GC 
The team played near neighbour’s Gowran golf club in a second round match on Saturday 28th of June, with two fourball matches at each venue. Castlecomer set the platform for victory with two decisive wins in the home matches. The away matches proved to be very close and exciting affairs . Castlecomer snatched victory when winning the last hole played in the second match, to ensure a half in their match and overall victory for the team on the day. Congrats to team manager Seamus O’Connor and his team players on their exciting win. Team members home: Michael Dermody and Victor Smyth, Christy Comerford and Pat Comerford. Team members away:  Paddy McGuinness and Michael Healy, Ned Mahon and Seamus O’Connor.

23rd June. Inter club report. 
Boys Fred Daly. 
 Our boys Fred Daly team played Kilkenny in the second round of this competition on Wednesday 18t June. This match was to provide a demanding challenge for our team as the Kilkenny team was comprised of mostly category one quality golfers.Our team despite their best efforts were to lose out to an exceptionally good Kilkenny team, who played top quality golf to win the match. Hard luck and thanks to all our Fred Daly team members who represented the club in this competition. Most team members are under age for some future years, and this years experience will serve them well in the years ahead.Thank also to team manager Mark Shortall. Team members were: Billy Rowe,John Joe Buggy, Eoin Healy,Tommy Mulhall and Charlie Ryan. 
Junior Cup
The club junior cup team played Bunclody in the 4th round of this competition on Saturday 21st of June. The match provided some top quality golf in a close and exciting encounter.Many of the matches were only decided on the final holes played and Castlecomer were to emerge victorious when winning two home matches and one away match .Congratulations to team manager Michael Buggy and his team members,  on a great win over a good Bunclody team Team members home: Mark Shortall ,Damien Knox,and Robbie Brennan Team members away: Niall Sullivan and Victor Smyth. 
 Michael Moore Cup. 
Our Michael Moore cup team continued their good run of success in this competition,when they defeated Newbridge in their 2nd round match on Saturday 21st June. Despite being drawn away in this match,with four away games in Newbridge, the team won most matches played and can look forward with confidence to their next round challenge in this competition. Well done to team manager Pat Haughton and his team members on their most recent victory. Team Members home:Gerry Mealy, Michael O’Connor and Ned Mahon.  Irish Mixed Foursomes v Baltinglass GC 
 After their success in earlier matches , our team played Baltinglass in a third round match of this competition on Saturday 14th of June.Despite their best efforts on the day,  the team were to eventually lose out to a very good Baltinglass team, who played some top quality golf in all matches. Hard luck to team manager Seamus O’Connor and his team members for their commitment and dedication in reaching the 3rd round of this very competitive competition. Team members on the day were home :Michael Buggy and Ellen Phelan, Michael Daly and Maria Downey .Away :Shane Coakley and Honoria Fogarty,Paul Rice and Theresa Manning. 
 Barton Cup v New Ross GC 
The mens Barton cup played New Ross in a third round match on Sunday 15th June.As the draw had determined Castlecomer had the advantage of having three of the five matches at home .The team playing some excellent quality golf proceeded to win two of the home games and clinched victory when winning the first game away in New Ross.This was an excellent win against a very good and well balanced New Ross team ,who  played some top quality golf also.Well done to team manager Mark O’Dowda and his players who advance to play Carlow golf club in the next round. Team players home, Michael Buggy and Nicky Walsh, Warren Byrne and Robbie Brennan, Shane Coakley and Gavin Carroll. Team players away, Niall O’Sullivan and Jim Dunne, Mark Shortall and John Joe Buggy.

INTER Club Report
 It was another busy and exciting weekend for our men’s Inter club teams in official Golf Ireland competitions. With expectations high after the successes of the previous week our teams once again provided some outstanding performances. 
 LEINSTER TROPHY V Callan GC
Our Leinster Trophy team played Callan in this competition. The match consisted of seven singles match play games. As Castlecomer were the away team as per the draw,four games were played away in Callan golf club. The team players produced some quality golf,  winning most matches home and away to progress to the next round. Congratulations to team manager Nicky Walsh and his team members on another fine performance. Team members home were: Warren Byrne ,Jim Dunne and Marty  O’Shea. Team members away were: Shane Coakley, Conor Kelly,Paul Rice and Ciaran Kelly.

 The team played a very strong and competitive Baltinglass team in a first round match on Saturday 7th June.With two fourball matches in each venue, the tie produced high quality golf before finishing level at two games each.This necessitated a tie hole play off in Castlecomer as they were the home team.The nominated pairing of Michael Dermody and Victor Smyth won the first hole play off to advance Castlecomer to the next round.Well done to team manager Seamus O’Connor and team members on an excellent win over a very strong Baltinglass team.  Men’s Junior Cup v New Forest GC
The junior cup team played New Forest in a 3rd match of this competition on Sunday the 8th June.The match consisted of five singles games, with Castlecomer as the home team having three games in Castlecomer and two away in New Forest. As expected at this level, the standard of golf was excellent and provided a tense and exciting match. The Castlecomer team produced some excellent golf in both venues to eventually win the match. Moore cup v Portlaoise GC
The club Moore cup team began the defence of their Moore cup title when they played Portlaoise golf club in their opening round match of this year’s competition on Sunday 1st June. The team continued their good form of last year with a decisive win in the match.The team won two of the home matches early and were also flat in the remaining game, when the team also won two away games to ensure victory.A good start to this year’s campaign by the manager Pat Haughton and all his team members.Team members at home were: Gerry Mealy, Michael O’Connor and Dick Farrell. Away team members were: Michael Doheny, Martin Brennan, Eamonn Breen and Seamus O’Connor. 
FRED DALY Trophy v Bunclody GC
 The club junior Fred Daly team had a fantastic win over a very good Bunclody team in a tense and exciting match on Sunday 1st June. With three games at home and two games away, it provided a brilliant match, with golf of the highest standard. Castlecomer having won two of the home games ensured victory when Tommy Mulhall won the final away game to clinch a superb win for the team. The quality of golf on display in this match by the players on both teams was of an exceptional standard and was a credit to all the young players involved. Congratulations to team managers Mark Shortall and Kieran Byrne and all the Castlecomer team members on a superb win. Team home players: Billy Rowe, Johnjoe Buggy and Eoin Healy. 26th May. Club Fundraising Team Classic
Our annual fundraiser classic, which was played from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th May, was a great success with 127 teams participating.Thanks to our own members and visiting club members for once again supporting this key fundraiser. Thanks also to our Main Sponsor Rapid Fire and Safety Ltd for their support, and thanks also to all the businesses and individuals who have generously provided sponsorship for the competition. A special thanks  to our hardworking course staff and volunteers for their hard work in preparing the course , which was in pristine condition over the four days. Aso thanks to everyone who has helped in organising the competition and to those who have volunteered to help out during the classic.

Irish United Nations Veterans Association Golf Classic

Number 8 Post, the Kilkenny branch of IUNVA, Irish United Nations Veterans Association. held a very popular and successful golf classic in the form of a Champagne Scramble in Castlecomer Golf Club on Friday 16 May 2025.
Castlecomer Golf Club are proud to support our veterans to help raise funds for this very worthy charity.
The weather on the day was very favourable and made it a very pleasant day for all who played.
One of the  topics in the clubhouse afterwards was how good the course was and in particular the greens. All are looking forward to supporting this event again next year.

Irish Junior Foursomes.
 The club under 18 junior foursomes team played Wexford golf club in the first round on Saturday 17th May.The match was based on two 18 hole foursomes games with one home and one away game with best aggregate holes won deciding the outcome. The team played excellent golf in both matches before losing out by a very close margin of just two holes down over the two games A great performance by our team players against a very strong Wexford club of the highest standard Well done to team manager Mark Shortall and his team players on representing the club at this level so well.  PIERCE PURCELL SHIELD. 
The club Pierce Purcell team played Abbeyleix in a first round match on Sunday 18th May.With two games in each club the match provided an exciting contest as both teams won their respective home games. This resulted in a tie hole playoff in Abbeyleix as they were the home team. Our team were unlucky to lose on the first playoff hole. The past week was a very busy week for our various Inter Club teams with four teams in action during this time.
BARTON CUP V Kilkenny GC
The Barton cup team had a great win over Kilkenny golf club on Monday 5th May.The team playing very good golf won two of the home matches and one away match to confirm overall victory in a decisive manner, as the other two pairings were both in a winning position at the time also.Congratulations to team manager Mark O’Dowda and his team on their success on the day.
Irish Mixed Foursomes v Rathsallagh GC
The mixed foursomes team played a very good Rathsallagh team in a first round match on Saturday 10th May.With two games in each club the match finished level as both teams won their two respective home games. This then resulted in a tie hole playoff between two nominated pairings. The Castlecomer nominated pairing of Shane Coakley and Maureen Norton then defeated their opponents on the second hole of the playoff to confirm victory for Castlecomer. Congratulations to team managers Seamus O’Connor and Betty Owens and their team on a superb win, after a great match against a very competitive Rathsallagh team. Team members at home were Shane Coakley and Maureen Norton, Michael Daly and Honoria Fogarty.  Team members away were Pat Comerford and Maria Downey, Paul Rice and Theresa Manning.
 Leinster Mens Trophy v Bunclody GC
Castlecomer played Bunclody in the first round on Sunday 11th May.With home advantage Castlecomer had four of the seven match play singles games at home.This was to prove beneficial to the team as they won three of the home games and secured overall victory when winning two away games also.It was was a very good performance by all the team members as the Bunclody team competed sternly all through the match.Congratulations to team manager Nicky Walsh and his team.Home players were  Adam Phelan, Jim Dunne, Marty O’Shea and Ciaran Kelly. Away players were Shane Coakley,John Joe Buggy and Paul Rice.
MEN’S JUNIOR CUP v Mountrath GC
Castlecomer played Mountrath in the 2nd round of this competition on Sunday 11th May.With three of the five singles games in Mountrath it proved to be a stern challenge. However the team members put in a great performance when winning two of the away games and confirmed victory by winning one of the home games also, against a very good Mountrath team. Congratulations to team manager Michael Buggy and all the team members on their hard earned win. Team Members at home were Damien Knox and Mark Shortall.  Team members away were Victor Smyth, Niall O’Sullivan and Robert Brennan.
Overall a very successful week for our Inter Club teams in official Golf Ireland competitions winning four out of four matches contested. A special feature of the team’s success was the performance of two of our junior members Adam Phelan and John Joe Buggy,  who won both of their respective matches. Best wishes to all our teams in their future matches and sincere thanks to all team managers and the players for their dedication in representing the club in Inter Club competitions.

Senior Men”s 18 Hole Open Singles

A Senior 18 Hole Open Singles Competition will be held in Castlecomer on the second Monday of each month.

It begins next Monday April 14th.

This competition is open to all Golf Ireland players who are 50 years of age or older.

The handicap allowance will be 100%.

With the Inter club competitions well underway last week, two of our teams were in action.
JB Carr versus Callan GC
The JB Carr team played Callan away in a first round match on Tuesday 22nd April .The atrocious weather that prevailed during the near entirety of the match made playing conditions difficult for both sets of players However the players on both teams produced a very competitive and exciting match in the circumstances. Callan were to emerge victorious when after two games finished all square,  they won both tie hole playoffs ,which together with an earlier win in another game sealed the overall match. Hard luck to our team players and team manager Martin Brennan on the day.They have represented the club with great success over the last few years and their commitment is appreciated by the club. Team members on the day were: Tommy O’Neill and Michael Manogue ,Michael Dermody and Pat Comerford, John Phelan and Michael O’Connor.,Ned Mahon and Marty O’Shea ,Andy Cleere and Seamus Coogan.

Castlecomer played Carlow in a first round match on Saturday 26th April with two games at home and two games away.The team players produced an outstanding performance when winning the two home games decisively and clinching the overall victory by winning one of the away games in Carlow. Well done to team manager Seamus O’Connor and his team on a great win. Team players at home: Paul Rice and Theresa Manning ,Michael Buggy and Eileen Healy. 25th April.  This years club fundraising classic takes place from May 22nd – 25th.

This is one of the clubs main fundraisers and we’d really appreciate if everyone could put their shoulder to the wheel again this year by trying to source teams and sponsors. Cost for a team of four is €160. Cost to sponsor a tee box is €200. The timesheet is now open for bookings.

The Men’s  Inter Club competitions for 2025 commenced over the weekend.Our Jimmy Bruen team got the season underway when they played Bunclody in a first round match.With two games at home and two away,  it provided to be a very close and exciting match.With both teams winning one home and one away match each, the tie was to finish all square. This resulted in a tie hole play off by a nominated pair from each team. Unfortunately we were to lose out on the first hole played and eliminated from the competition. Hard luck is extended to team manager Michael Buggy and his players as they were unlucky to lose out after a first class match. Team members on the day were at home: Robbie Brennan and Warren Byrne, Colum Lynch and Ciaran O’Neill. Away pairings were Victor Smyth and Marty O’Shea, Gavin Carroll and Shane Coakley.

There was a great entry of over 300 members and guests  for the Club’s Bar Masters Competition draw.
With each person picking their team of six players in the US Masters, it proved to be a very exciting competition. Well done to Kevin O’Neill on winning the  competition in a very tight contest, with the winner decided only on a tiebreak, where Kevin was closest to the Masters winning score. A special thanks to club members Robert Brennan and Ciarán O’Neill for organising this competition and club fundraiser.

The club will run a new monthly Monday Mens Open Seniors 18 Hole Singles Competition from April until October. The first competition takes place next Monday 14th April. The competition will be played off the green markers and is open to seniors fifty years old and over.The entry fee is €10 for members and €20 for visitors. This weekend’s singles competition will now be a  V Par Competition

For those players who have never played this format before the scoring system is different to stableford.

A player should just record his numerical score on each hole on the scorecard as normal and the computer will show his final score on completion of the round.

Each hole is treated separately as in stableford so a few bad holes does not necessarily put you out of contention.

31st Mar. Junior Golf Academy

The club will host a golf academy for boys and girls from six to 18 years of age from April 19th to October 25th . The programme which runs from 2 to 5pm each Saturday, includes golf lessons with PGA pro Sean O’Donoghue, and will cover full swing, short game and putting, rules and etiquette, practice and play. No golf equipment needed to start.There will also be Monday competitions during the summer months. 5th Mar. The golf course will re-open for play on Friday next following course maintenance. Members please note that the front area of the ninth green is marked GUR. You must drop within one club lenght of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole. Bear in mind that the nearest point of relief may be off the green.
The re earthed ground where bunkers used to be on holes 8, 9, 11 and 12 are still GUR areas. Drop within one club lenght of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

Scheduled Hollow Coring of the Greens takes place this week. The course will be closed from Monday 3rd March . Members will be notified when the work is completed and when the course will reopen.
Captains Drive In – Sunday March 2nd
Mens Captain Michael Buggy ,Lady Captain Noreen Curry and Junior captain John Joe Buggy were joined by incoming club President Delia O’Donohoe to start the golfing year. There was a great turnout of members for the Captains Drive In on Sunday 2th March. Club member Gerri Dunne with great panache and in full costume , piped the captains and President along the route to the 12th tee, where they were served a glass of bubbly(non alcoholic) by Lady Vice Captain Aileen Coughlan, who presented LC Noreen with a bouquet of flowers in honour of the occasion .LC Noreen gave an eloquent and moving speech expressing the great honour and pride she feels as she takes up her new role in the club .She paid tribute to her late father- in -law Paddy Curry who was a highly regarded green keeper in the club for many years and later Mens Captain. She praised the club members for their loyalty and the tradition of volunteerism, which is essential in our club.This year is the 50th anniversary of the club’s move from Cloudmount to Drumgoole, and she and Captain Michael will be coordinating events to mark this memorable date in the club’s history. Captain Michael remembered past members of the club and a respectful silence was observed in their memory. Captain Michael who has been a club member since his youth and is our top mens golfer, wished all members an enjoyable golfing year. President  Delia also spoke of the need for volunteers to give some time to our club. She is a wonderful role model for volunteering and has given great service to our club over a long number of years. Junior captain John Joe Buggy thanked those who selected him to take up this prestigious role in the club.Following faultless drives down the 12th, the assembled teams played in the 10 hole scramble before repairing to the club house for tasty fare served by Chef Lucasz and the bar staff.

Seniors AGM 

There was a large attendance at the Seniors AGM held on Wednesday 5th February.
Outgoing Captain Kieran Brennan welcomed Tom Mooney as our Captain for 2025 and wished him an enjoyable year in his role. Kieran thanked the committee and all members for their support in the last year. The meeting paid special thanks to outgoing secretary Donie Walsh, who is taking a short break from his role, for his great contribution to the Seniors over a long number of years. 23rd Jan. NOTICE: Due to the red storm warning the course is now closed. All flag pins have been removed from  the greens. The course will be closed tomorrow Friday. A course inspection will take place on Saturday morning and members will then be informed if the course will remain closed.

13th Jan. Men’s Winter League
Due to the course being covered in a white blanket of snow for the last week,  golf action was not possible.
With an improvement in the weather, Series 7 of the Winter League will hopefully recommence this week.
The Top 40 players plus ties will qualify for the Winter Series Top 40 Final . Best five scores over the Winter Series will count towards the final league table.

Club Joint AGM

The joint ÀGM took place on Thursday 12th December in the club house with a large number of members in attendance. Chairperson Sean Scanlon gave his last address to the members as he has completed his 3 years on the Committee of Management. We thank Sean and all the outgoing members of our Management Committee for their great work and outstanding service to our club.Best wishes to incoming Chairperson Liam Mooney and all the new members as they take up their roles on the Committee.

We thank outgoing President Austin Kelly for his dedicated service to the club over a long number of years, and he has been a great ambassador for our club in his role as Club President for the last two years. As a mark of his club commitment,  Austin has agreed to serve on our Committee of Management as Course Coordinator for another year. At the Club Joint AGM, Austin announced to great applause that club member and former Lady Captain Delia O’Donohoe would be our new club president for the next two years. Delia does trojan work for the club and we all wish her well in her new role as Club President.
