The run continues!!
Another amazing weekend for Castlecomer GC. The club has had an unbelievable run in inter-club fixtures so far this year and this weekend was no different with the Fred Daly, Moore Cup and JB Carr teams all winning.
Moore Cup
On Saturday the Moore Cup team earned a hard fought victory over Nenagh GC. Pat Haughtons’ charges, like so many ‘Comer teams this year, once again had the away draw and once again the all important away point was garnered. This time it was Seamus O’ Connor that secured the vital win, with Martin Goggy Brennan also looking like he too would take a point when called in. Eamon Breen and Michael Furlong were the others that made up the numbers in Nenagh and they will have better days ahead. Eamon in particular is riding the crest of a wave, and proving that age is not a barrier, when capturing one of the signature events in Castlecomer, the Donal McInerney Trophy last weekend. At home Nicky Walsh, Michael Healy and Ned Mahon all won their games with Ned finally putting a doughty adversary to the sword on the first playoff hole, securing the win for ‘Comer, Michael also had a narrow victory, when coming out on top in the final hole.
Fred Daly
The Fred Daly team of Billy Rowe, Adam Phelan, JohnJoe Buggy, Charlie Ryan and Eoin Healy beat Gowran Park GC on Sunday 3-2 in an enthralling encounter in Castlecomer GC. With Eoin and Charlie losing out in two very tight affairs in Gowran, it was imperative that there be no slip ups at home. Worry not, the young guns showed nerves of steel to win all three matches at home. JohnJoe had a comprehensive victory winning his match on the 12 th hole, with Adam securing the point with an excellent birdie on 17, while Billy got over the line on 15 after a very competitive match. Manager Del Todd has every reason to be immensely proud of his panel.
JB Carr
The JB Carr team had an epic victory over annual opponents Callan GC, when defeating them on the first play off hole in the County Final in Castlecomer on Sunday. These two teams have been ever present nemeses cover the last few years in this competition with both sides tasting victory over the other in the last few outings of the JB Carr. This time it was the turn of ‘Comer to win, and what a win it was. Leading 3-2 from the first leg, the ‘Comer lads needed to win three matches to move on to the provincial stages. But these Callan lads are made of stern stuff and they won 3-2, clinching victory on the 22nd hole, to force a playoff. The chosen pairing of Christy Comerford and Michael Daly had a magnificent birdie on the 19th hole to ensure victory for our lads, and to cement what has been an unbelievable start to the golfing season. The team was the aforementioned Daly and Comerford, Seamus O’ Connor and Ciaran Kelly, Andy Cleere and Pat Comerford, Tommy O’ Neill and Ned Mahon and John Phelan and Michael O’ Connor. These old geezers disprove the old adage that time is the enemy. Golf is unique as a sport, insofar as there’s a level for everyone, a partner for everyone and a competition for everyone, and these men continue to be a credit to themselves, their families and our club. We commend and applaud you lads and long may it continue, and long may you continue to golf to the standard we have become accustomed to!!
