Bunclody was the venue once again for this elite low handicap competition. We seem to have played the Slaneysiders on a weekly basis in one competition or another over the last few months. We have been successful in most of those matches and on Saturday that trend continued, with a fantastic win over the Carlow/Wexford men. A unique tournament run over aggregate match play, it brings out the best in the very best golfers that operate on an amateur setting. First out were Stephen “Young Dingle” Daly and Padraig “el shebab” Curry. In a pulsating match the ‘Comer pair were called in just as they drew level on the 16th hole, after a thrilling display of short game golf by both duos. Stars of the show however, were the pairing of Graham Lawlor and Michael Buggy. It’s fair to say both are in the twilight of their golfing careers, with Buggy seemingly representing Castlecomer GC since Auld God was a chap. Whether or which matters not, the only thing that’s important in these things is the result, and what a result it was. With Graham unerring from inside 12 feet and some superb iron play from Michael, these two components combined to seal victory for ‘Comer on the 16th hole. As mentioned above, the result is determined on an aggregate match play basis and with Graham and Michael 5 up on 16 and Stephen and Padraig returning to all square, the result was settled, victory for the ‘Comer team. They now advance to the quarterfinals of this insanely prestigious tournament, they await their opponents in confidence and are looking forward to whoever they face.
