What a tournament we witnessed in Castlecomer GC on Sunday. Run by the indomitable Michael Buggy, with his minions, the course attracted 51 golfers for this wonderful event. Coming from far and wide to try and tame the ‘Comer course was the tagline and it was two of our own that rose to the challenge. The immensely popular winner was none other than Jason Brennan, who over 27 holes shot an impressive 112 strokes to hold off his close friend and golfing companion Niall O’ Sullivan. These two stalwarts play golf the length and breadth of Ireland together, as well as attending numerous hurling matches together, not to mention the occasional sojourn to a chip shop!Hailing from Callan, but now an honorary ‘Comer man Niall O Sullivan ran Jason all the way but unfortunately for Sully he was to come up two shots shy of the eventual winner. This was an epic battle that ebbed and flowed between the two friends and the extra nine holes provided some spectacular golf and amazing twists and turns, but the cream always comes to the top, and Jason was not found wanting down the stretch with birdies on 13,15 and 18 securing a memorable victory for the ‘Comer man. Well done Jason, you now need to add the all elusive captains prize to your trophy collection. A certain Martin Brennan might have something to say about that though!! On a leaderboard that saw representatives from Cork and Limerick, spare a thought for young Liam Doyle who went toe to toe with the the winner and runner up for the last nine holes only to lose out to eventual nett winner Sean O’ Shea. Well done Liam, your day will surely come soon.
